WOUNDED MALE PRIDE is a savage beast, the impetus of untold human disasters throughout the centuries. The cause of wars, of political upheaval, of moments when men must look back and ask themselves, “Why the hell did I just do that?”
Sean looked at Cleo’s departing back, thinking it was strangely ironic that the Deputy Mayor of New York, a woman rumored to have no heart, had the most perfect heart-shaped ass on the entire planet. Such contradictions confused him, baffled him and, sadly, obsessed him. Sean sighed.
He had thought this little charade would help him get over her. Sadly, it only made it worse.
She had taken it on the chin, but didn’t flinch, didn’t wince, didn’t even have the decency to glare at him once with those hot amber eyes. Only her soothing constituent voice (patently false) had told him that he’d hit a nerve.
“Did it work?” asked Serena, finding him after the meeting was over.
“Did it restore my love life to its rightful order? No. Did it help my wounded pride? Hell, no. You did great, Serena. Thanks. Tell Robert hello, and we’ll have to go out for drinks one of these nights. I owe him.”
Serena patted his arm as if he was losing his mind. He was. “I’m sorry, Sean. But Cleo? I mean, come on.”
“You know her?” he asked, because he was fast learning that although everybody knew “of” Cleo, very few people knew her.
“Only by reputation. Douglas really likes working for her, but he doesn’t tell anybody because he’s afraid the guys will laugh at him. I think it’s hard for a lot of these tough, old-school men to work for a woman. But they seem to have an understanding. The men grumble and complain about her and Cleo lets them.”
Sean shook his head.
“What are you going to do?”
“Hell if I know.”
